“It’s Not a Death Sentence”: A Better Way to Treat Diabetes at TrueCare DPC

When people hear the word diabetes, it’s often accompanied by fear. Fear of needles, fear of lifelong medication, fear of getting worse. But for Priscilla Locklear, one of the providers here at TrueCare DPC, her mission is to change that narrative.

“One of the things I wish patients understood better is that diabetes is not a death sentence,” she says. “And it doesn’t always mean long-term insulin.”

Too often, patients are started on insulin during a hospital stay and assume it’s a permanent solution. But as Priscilla explains, insulin—while sometimes necessary early on—can often be tapered or even discontinued with the right strategy.

“I see patients who leave the hospital on insulin and come to me discouraged,” she shares. “But with targeted nutrition, movement, and the use of newer, more effective medications like Ozempic, Mounjaro, Farxiga, or Jardiance, many of them are able to transition off insulin altogether.”

This reflects a core part of Priscilla’s approach: meet the patient where they are, and then work with them—not just to manage blood sugar, but to regain control over their health.

In some cases, patients have been able to manage their diabetes without any medication at all. Through education, lifestyle change, and ongoing support, she helps people understand how their choices impact their condition—empowering them to take ownership of their health.

At TrueCare DPC, we’re proud to have clinicians like Ms. Locklear, FNP-C who don’t just follow protocols—they rethink them, always with the patient’s quality of life at the center. This is what the people of Fayetteville deserve in a primary care provider!
